End of semester procedures for leaving Student Housing

General information for all residents regarding end of semester for fall 2020

All residence and scholarship hall residents have to check out and return their room key. You will receive your key back when returning to campus in late January for spring semester. You do not have to move out – just take what you’ll need while you're away from campus to complete your fall classes and for winter break. 

Prior to Nov. 25, KU Student Housing staff will be distributing to each resident a COVID-19 at-home test kit, plus materials and information to complete end-of-semester check out. Here is more information about the at-home testing process.

Residents who complete check-out paperwork and turn in their key on or before noon on Nov. 25 are eligible for a housing and dining credit. Credit will show up on the spring semester housing charges in Enroll & Pay. A complete pdf of all fall credit rates - residence halls, apartments, scholarship halls, and dining - may be found on the housing website. Housing undergraduate staff members and others who receive their room and dining plan as part of their employment or leadership role are not eligible for a credit. 

Apartment residents will be notified when check-out materials are available to be picked up at the front desk.

Any resident who does not follow the proper check-out procedure forfeits the room credit. Residence and scholarship hall students may also incur an improper check-out charge AND lock change fee.

Any student who wants to stay through the completion of finals may stay until Saturday, Dec. 12 with no additional housing charge. However, those students who remain are not eligible for a credit.

Residents who will leave KU permanently at semester must submit a contract cancellation through the Housing portal in myKU.

When may residents return?

Apartment residents who are taking the housing credit and who left on or before Nov. 25 may return by appointment only beginning Jan. 25. Apartment residents who are not taking the credit may stay during winter break at no additional charge. Residence and scholarship hall students will be able to return by appointment only beginning on Jan. 29.

Move-Back appointment scheduling

All Student Housing residents will schedule a time period to move back to KU. The room scheduler will be available through the Housing portal in January. We will notify students when the room scheduler is available.

If you are an out-of-state student who is coordinating long-distance travel, please feel free to contact Student Housing if you do not find an appropriate time available. The housing staff is available 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, at 785-864-4560.

At this time, KU Student Housing anticipates that we may need to restrict guests, including family members, from entering our buildings when residents return for spring semester.
