Move out

If you've moved out, or are scheduled to move out,
information on this page applies to you

If you need to change the move-out time you selected on the survey:

Send an email to housing@ku.edu and ensure your message, at minimum, contains:

  • Student first and last name
  • Phone number

A staff member will call students to coordinate changes to move-out times. If your previous e-mail did not contain the student name and a phone number, send a follow up e-mail with the information. Please note, staff will be calling from a 785-864-XXXX phone number.

If you left, but kept your room key, follow these instructions:

You can return your room key without returning to campus. Please put your room key in a padded envelope (it must be a padded or bubble envelope, otherwise the key will be removed when processed through the US Postal Service). To avoid having a card or sticky note get misplaced when the mail is opened, please use a full-size, 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper to convey the following information:

  • Your first and last name
  • KU ID number
  • Building
  • Room Number
  • Date you moved out
  • An explanation that you have removed all of your items out of your room but were unable to return your key.

Mail the envelope to: KU Student Housing, 422 W. 11th St,  Suite DSH, Lawrence, KS 66045

If you curently have a move-out time assigned, here is what to expect:

Please arrive during your scheduled time. If you come at a time other than your chosen time, you will not be granted access to the building. We are required to limit the number of people in our facilities based on CDC guidance and a directive from the Kansas governor.

A resident may bring along no more than two people to assist with moving out. This helps control the number of people in the building and maintains appropriate social distancing.

To assist with move out, you should bring:

  • Your KUID card and room key.
  • Packing materials: consider packing boxes, tape, and plastic trash bags for miscellaneous items or clothing.
  • Personal protection measures if you wish: Clorox wipes, hand sanitizers, gloves.
  • You may also consider a dolly or cart to speed up your move out.

Once you arrive, you will have two hours to pack your belongings and get them out of the building to your vehicle. Time limits will be strictly enforced to limit the number of people in the building to ensure appropriate social distancing.

Where to park

You may park in any parking lot that is close to your building. No parking permit is needed and no tickets will be given to anyone parked in a designated parking stall. However, do not park in a fire lane and do not park in a handicapped accessible space without the appropriate credentials.

Arrival at your building

All KU Student Housing personnel can be identified by a name badge and will be able to help.

When your check-in time arrives, expect to wait outside the front door until a staff member is able to allow your entrance.

Check-in at the table inside the front door will consist of showing your KUID card to the staff member. They will verify your name against a prepared move-out register and give everyone a sticker to wear to identify you as part of the scheduled move out. Residents will pick up the Express Check Out form and read its instructions.

Residents may use any access points of the building to exit and load vehicles; however, doors may not be propped open.

Please plan to take all of your belongings with you. If you leave any items, they will be considered abandoned property. If you have items you no longer want or wish to donate, please take them with you and plan to donate them once you arrive at your final destination. This is also an effort to combat the potential spreading of the virus.

You do not need to clean your room. Just remove any trash and dispose of it.

Check-out

Once everything in your room is packed and taken out of the building to your vehicle, return for a final time to the check-in table to finish your move-out.

You will be asked to turn in your updated forwarding address from the Express Check Out form and the staff member will check you out of the room management computer system. You will be asked to insert your room key in an envelope, staple the Express Check Out form to it, and drop both into a box located at the desk.

Check your mailbox to gather any mail. Any mail that comes after your move-out date will be forwarded as time allows, but it may be several weeks. If you’ve ordered a package sent to your KU address, know that carriers operate with varying processes, so check with your carrier, such as Amazon, FedEx, or UPS. Some carriers do not allow KU Student Housing to return or forward a package, and will place that responsibility back on the recipient.

Thank you again for your patience and flexibility. None of us wanted your experience living in KU Student Housing to end this abruptly. We hope that you will be able to complete your academic coursework remotely and that you will be safe and healthy as we all deal with this global pandemic. We look forward to better days and to the return of the Jayhawk nation to Lawrence.
