Step-by-Step Instructions for a Successful Checkout

Follow the printed checklist that will be taped to your door and utilize the checklist below to complete a successful move-out.

Step-by-Step Instructions for a Successful Checkout

In preparation for your check-out, please:

  • Vacuum
  • Dust
  • Unplug your fridge at least 3 days before you are planning to leave so it can properly defrost
  • Open all drawers
  • Throw away trash
  • Thoroughly clean your space
  • Get everything out of your space (you must have an empty space for check-out)
  • Double check all cabinets, closets, dressers, desks, and bathrooms

The room should look like it did when you moved in with no remaining trash or belongings. A list of dumpster locations is available below.

Residents with bikes on campus will need to remove their bikes when they check out. Students without a summer contract will have their bikes removed by facilities staff.

Go to your hall front desk, or schedule a time for an undergraduate staff member to check your space. Improper checkout or damage to the room will result in additional charges.

Charges for damage and abandoned property:

Students will be held financially responsible for any damage or repair to their rooms caused by accidents, neglect, or intent. Charges can include but are not limited to: Improper trash disposal, belongings still in the space, wall/ceiling/floor repair, odor remediation, lost keys, and lock changes. Any property left will be deemed abandoned and disposed of by KU Housing & Residence Life resulting in additional charges. When more than one resident occupies the same room and responsibility for damage cannot be ascertained by KU Housing & Residence Life, costs will be assessed and divided equally among the room’s residents.

Collect all remaining mail and packages from your mailbox or the front desk.

Any mail delivered to residents not on-campus for the summer will have their mail forwarded to the address listed in their Enroll & Pay account. To update or confirm your forwarding address, log in to your Enroll & Pay account and select “Personal Details” from the home screen.

Note: Some carriers do not forward mail or packages. Any mail or packages received from Amazon Flex or mail not classified as First Class will be returned to the sender.

Return all keys you were issued to the front desk of your building.

  • Downs Hall residents will not have keys to turn in, but still need to complete the checkout process with UG staff.
  • Scholarship hall residents will turn their key in to the UG staff member who checks their space.
