Returning Residents

Returning KU Housing residents have the opportunity to live on campus again for the upcoming academic year. Eligible returning students will complete application and room selection through their myKU Portal.

Overview

Housing & Residence Life offers housing for returning residents to continue living on campus and provides an Off-Campus Housing Marketplace for KU students to explore housing options in the Lawrence community. Returning residents can select from eligible apartment spaces in Hawker, Jayhawker Towers, McCarthy, and Stouffer Place, GSP Hall and eligible Special Interest Communities. Please note that apartment spaces are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Room selection groups will be assigned through a lottery process. As long as your housing application is submitted by the application deadline of January 23, 2026 at 11:59 PM CST, the date/time you complete your application does not impact your room selection lottery time. After the application window closes, the application will no longer be available. The contract is not complete until a space has been selected during the room selection process.

Key Dates for Returning Residents

Important dates for incoming returning students
December 2, 2025	Application Opens Current residents can log in to the myKU Portal to apply.
December 3, 2025	Beginning at 9:00 AM CST, previous residents who do not hold a current contract and are not currently living on campus can log in to the myKU Portal to apply.
January 23, 2026	Deadline to Apply Apply by 11:59 PM CST, to be eligible to live with Housing & Residence Life.
January 26, 2026	Standby List Available The application will no longer be available. A standby list will be available at 8:00 AM CST. The standby list is NOT a housing contract or a guarantee of housing. Housing & Residence Life will work to accommodate students on the standby list if space is available after room selection.
January 28-February 2, 2026	Room Retention Selection From January 28 at 10:00 AM CST, until February 2 at 8:00 AM CST, students eligible to retain their space will have the opportunity to select. Each resident is responsible for retaining their own space. Roommate pull-ins will not be allowed during the room retention period. Students may only retain their current rooms if they live in eligible spaces within Jayhawker Towers, Hawker Apartments, and McCarthy Hall. If a student’s current space is not eligible for retention, they will need to participate in room selection to secure housing for next year.
February 2, 2026	Room Selection Group Numbers Announced Emails will be sent with lottery group numbers, date and time to begin room selection. Those who retained a space will not receive a group number.
February 4, 2026	Room Selection will Begin Those who retained space will have the option to pull in roommates as space allows, on a first-come basis, when room selection begins. During room selection, returning residents will be able to pull in multiple roommates as space allows. Students must have a group number to be eligible to be pulled in.
February 13, 2026	Room Selection will End Contracts for any residents who have not completed room selection by 12:00 PM CST will be canceled.
Optional Items	Special Interest Communities During the application process, you will have the opportunity to express interest in returning to Honors, ROTC, Rainbow Community or a Gender Inclusive Assignment (GIA) for the 2026-2027 academic year. Medical Accommodations Request Contact the Student Access Center by January 27, 2026 indicating your plan to live on campus. Request to reinstate your housing accommodation for the 2026-2027 academic year. Recommendations received after this date will be considered but will be accommodated as space is available.
Scholarship Hall Residents	Students wanting to live in the scholarship hall community should complete the 2026-27 Housing Application, submit a scholarship hall application, and select a space during room selection. Scholarship hall offers will begin to be sent in the spring. If an offer is received and accepted, the assignment would be changed to the scholarship hall community. Residents returning to a Scholarship Hall for the 2026–2027 academic year must apply by January 23 at 11:59 PM CST. Room selection will occur during Hall meetings beginning January 30. Scholarship Hall Room Selection must be completed by February 25. If you do not plan to return to a Scholarship Hall, but would still like on campus housing, please contact KU Housing & Residence Life.
