Scholarship Halls
Affordable living. Shared responsibility. A community that feels like home.
Scholarship halls provide one of the most affordable on-campus living options at KU. In return for completing two to three hours of shared duties each week, residents enjoy reduced housing rates, gain practical skills, and become part of a close-knit community.
Outside scholarships are not required to apply for or live in a scholarship hall. Both prospective and current undergraduate students can apply through a competitive selection process.
What is a Scholarship Hall?
Scholarship halls are small, student-led living communities where residents live, study, eat and work together. Each resident contributes two to three hours per week to support the community. Depending on the hall and assigned tasks, duties may include preparing meals, cleaning shared areas or assisting with other community needs. In return, residents receive a reduced housing rate that includes a dining plan.
The experience goes beyond affordability; residents develop practical skills, take on leadership roles, and help shape the traditions and daily life of their hall.
Why Students Choose Scholarship Halls
Scholarship halls provide a reduced housing rate in exchange for a few hours of shared duties each week. A dining plan is included in the housing rate.
With about 50 residents in each hall, scholarship halls offer a smaller community within the larger university. Residents get to know their neighbors, support one another and build friendships that can last well beyond graduation.
Shared responsibilities help residents gain practical experience in cooking, cleaning, teamwork and time management. Residents can also pursue leadership positions and participate in community decision-making.
Scholarship halls provide convenient access to classes, campus programs and university events while giving residents a welcoming place to call home.
Scholarship halls have been part of the KU experience since 1925. Generations of residents have contributed to the traditions, relationships and shared sense of responsibility that define these communities.

More Than 100 Years of Community
Scholarship halls have been part of the KU experience since 1925. Although the communities have evolved, their foundation remains the same: students sharing responsibility, supporting one another and building traditions together.

Even in the 1950s, scholarship halls had an open pantry for snacks.
